NM502 Simpler, lower cost signalized option

Below is a conceptual drawing for a signalized alternative to the planned roundabout.

Preferred optiopn from the NMDOT Environmental Assessment of 2007, County Council approved!

Similar to 2012 Parsons-Brinckerhoff 3-lane and 4-lane design options.

This design approach would address most project objectives nicely-- better than the planned roundabout.

  • Minimize construction chaos
  • Require less Right of Way acquisition
  • Reduce project cost (likely)
  • Provide better perfomance and safety for all users
  • Minimize driver adaptation
  • Provide a better gateway: less pavement and easier for visitors to drive
  • Handle emergency evacuations more smoothly
  • More flexible: signal behavior adjustable by programming
  • Allow expansion and more use of the existing triangular park

Would it be possible to isolate and install a separate (almost-) always-green signal for the right-hand lane of Eastbound Trinity so through traffic would seldom have to stop?
