NM502/East Road: Current conditions and performance -- Marginal-poor at peak

Those who travel East Road are somewhat less "equal" than Trinity Drive users. A long queue often develops. Photo was taken 5/12/11 at 7:36AM.
On 2-lane roads, cars travel in "packs", following the slowest vehicle encountered. Speed limit to the East of Airport Rd. is 50 MPH (right), then decreases to 35 as traffic reaches the junction with Canyon Road (above). During a morning commute, I found that traffic slows to about 35 or less well ahead of the actual speed limit decrease, as a result of increasing congestion.
Left-hand turn lanes on East Road help keep things moving. Cars from the smaller streets that meet East Rd. can face some delays and possibly tight merges. Right-hand acceleration lanes such as the one at Eastgate would help. East Road would be a good candidate for expansion to four lanes.
